Unifying Images/Caged By Freedom

The characters in A Weekend Near Madison live in an extremely open and free society, one that is largely stimulating, fair, and good. Traditional family values are seen as a look back to a more restrictive and unfair way of life. These characters fantasize about lives that would allow them to have both the freedoms they currently enjoy and the security of tradition.

Although the play is naturalistic and benefits from a reasonably realistic and natural looking playing area---a living room in David’s and Doe’s cabin---there is room to incorporate images that might suggest a sense of being trapped out in the open---either stranded or hampered by the environment. The following images might be incorporated somewhere in designing the look of the stage.
